Fontan (fountain)

Fontan (fountain) geyser is the largest regular geyser on the Vitrazh. It functions in a stable mode, with eruptions approx. every 25 minutes. Eruption lasts 4 minutes; fountain height is about 10 meters. Geyser’s vent is a round hole, 60 centimeters in diameter. It's located on Vitrazh's horizontal ledge (a so called Fontans Platform).

Tatyana Ustinova considered Fontan to be "the most beautiful geyser in the Valley". This is how she described its eruption: "Fontan's eruption is quite spectacular. It starts with two or three splashes, rising just above vent's edge. Then jets hit upright, up to 20 meters. They do not form a single heavy water column. There's a lot of water and the jets are easily distinguishable in the steam. At the top the jets form a crown of sparkling sprays. At first there isn't much steam, then its amount increases while the amount of water declines. In the end of eruption jets shoot not upright, but angled at 80-85° towards South—West. Then water discharges stop and only steam goes out. Finally, a few jets shoot up 12-15 meters, geyser releases steam for another 30 seconds and then calms down, steaming lightly." (T.I. Ustinova, "Kamchatka Geysers", 1955).
